What do Legos and
the year 1915 have in common? In
celebration of this year’s West Jefferson centennial, the Ashe County Public
Library is hosting a Lego competition open to all ages, even adults!
All entries must be made entirely of
Legos (just make sure it can fit through the library door!).
Each entry must be reflective of West Jefferson in 1915 and may only be
submitted in one of the following categories: people, buildings, scenes, or transportation
from the early 20th century.

To enter,
bring your Lego creation to the library between January 6th and May
1st to be photographed. Also,
be sure to include either a written description or short video explaining your
creation. Entries will be judged based on creativity and realism. Awards will
be given in May, and winning entries will be displayed in the library from May
18 - 31.
For building inspiration, visit the library to
check out Lego building books and to view historic photos of West Jefferson in
1915. The library also has many Lego books available for checkout. Visit the library Facebook page to see the
centennial Lego creations. The Ashe County Arts
Council is also featuring a local art exhibit through Feb.
13.
For those who do not have Legos, join the new
Lego club offered the third Thursday of the month and complete the Lego
challenge. The first Lego Club is at 4:00 p.m. January 15 for grades K-3rd
and at 5:00 p.m. for 4th grade and older. The Lego club is made
possible by a Lego grant received by the Appalachian Regional Library system.
Centennial celebrations continue as the
Traveling Trunk, provided by the Museum of Ashe County History, makes its way
to the library. At 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8, children in grades K-6th
can time travel to West Jefferson in 1915 by exploring the contents of
the
trunk. Learn about the significance of the railroad in shaping the town
and find out what it was like to be a kid in West Jefferson in the early
20th century. Again, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, families are
invited for a
closer look at the trunk artifacts presented by Ramona Renfroe, Museum
of Ashe County History director.
Swing
by the library every Saturday this month, beginning January 10, and have fun
creating a creature featured in this month’s StoryWalk book, Under the Snow by Melissa Stewart. The StoryWalk will be up at the Ashe County Park
off Old Highway 16 throughout January. The StoryWalk is provided by the Library
Services and Technology Act
(LSTA) EZ Literacy & Lifelong Learning Grant, made possible through funding
from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the
provisions of the LSTA as administered by the State Library of North Carolina,
a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.
The
regular Storytime, Tot time and Baby Bounce schedule will resume the week of
January 12th. Baby Bounces for birth to two year olds are Tuesdays
at 10 a.m., Tot Times for 2-3 year olds are Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., and
Storytimes for 4-5 year olds are Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
