“End of Summer” Party is planned for Ashe Teens at the Library

An afterhours party for teens is scheduled to take place from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday, August 2 at the Ashe Library.    Don’t be late and DON’T MISS the fun!  The party starts with magic and comedy by Caleb Sigmon at 5:00 p.m. in the downstairs community room.  Again, you won’t want to miss mind-blowing magic that happens right in front of your face!  After the entertainment, the party moves upstairs where teens will rock the library with a DJ for dancing, karaoke, gaming, food and prize drawings throughout the night … well until 10:00 p.m.  Teens have been logging time spent reading this summer to earn tickets for the end of summer prize drawing.  There are some pretty cool prizes donated by local businesses and there is still time to read for prizes, so be sure to stop by the library and get signed up.  Tickets can also be earned by attending teen summer programs.

Coming Programs:
This Saturday, July 19 enjoy the explosive action of “Independence Day,” featured movie, on the Teen Screen in the teen space.  Showtime is at 3:00 p.m.
Teens create Crayon Art at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.  Use the power of heat to melt your own work of art!

Murder is Music

Carine Mattix, “mother of murder victim”
and “detective” Sarah Spanburgh
Recently the teens took part in an interactive murder mystery-play, written and directed by Sarah Spanburgh.  Sarah works as full-time reference librarian and “part-time” teen librarian at Ashe Library.  The play, starring staff and volunteers, was entitled “Music is Murder.”  The mystery required solving the murder of Kystal Kane, a pop star / “artiste.”   Sarah, playing the part of detective, enlists the help of teens to sift through evidence and interrogate suspects.    Teens used deductive reasoning skills for evaluating motives to draw conclusions on the case.  They presented highly convincing arguments for implicating the murderer, but when suspects are cornered into “confessing,” the ending was quite a surprise.  The play was a hit and all agreed that Sarah should be nominated for “Playwright of the Year Award.”
