James "Dawg" Wood's Illustrations on Display at the Library

The art of James “Dawg” Wood, Ashe County artist, is on display at the library during the month of December, 2015 through January 2016.  His illustrations are from the book “Where Do Birds Sleep” by Guy McFarland Jennings of Neptune Beach, Florida. The book is under consideration for a Caldecott picture book award. “Dawg” is a self-taught artist, old-time fiddler and primitive wood-worker.

His primary art represents the cultures, traditions, and music of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.  The comic outlook in a hillbilly setting is created in great detail and most enjoyable. His studio is located at the old hotel in downtown West Jefferson.
