Beaver Creek Bleachers Get a New Life

When Beaver Creek High School was torn down, an alumni member of the class of 57’ saved the bleachers that students, teachers, and BCHS fans once sat on.  These boards where donated to be used as a fundraiser in support of the school’s memorial scholarship fund.   Becky Burgess, vice-president of the first graduating class of the school (1957), suggested that some of the boards be used to build “library twigs.”  Basically, a twig is a box full of books put in an area where those who live nearby can take and/or leave books at any time without having to have a library card.  Since Ashe County covers such a large area, community members who live out in the county have difficulty getting to the library. A twig is not quite a branch location, but it is still a place where folks can find something good to read.

Last year the Ashe County Home Builders Association (ACHB) built and donated two twig libraries that were initially stocked with donations and placed in Lansing and Todd.  Each month librarians visit the twigs to leave library calendars and current program information, as well as check and restock inventory if needed.  Once the twig is established in its location, it begins to reflect the interests of its users who contribute donations.  You never know what type of books will be shared in a twig!

Recently, Mickey Pruitt and Joel Robinson, of ACHB, took a couple of old bleacher boards and constructed two more twigs to be placed in the county.  One of the twigs will be mounted at the Fleetwood Post Office and the other will be put on Hwy 88 next to Sheets Grocery.  The bleacher twigs are currently on display in the library while receiving the finishing artistic touches that will make them unique.  Local artist Stephen Shoemaker, another Beaver Creek alumnus, has drawn a Beaver reading a book to be painted on the twigs by Jessica Weaver, who works at the library’s circulation desk.

These twigs should not be seen as competition for the public library, but a supplement to what the library does by helping to spread the mission of promoting literacy, the love of reading, and the sense of community.
