Celebrate Teen Tech Week! March 10-16

Teen Tech Week (TTW) is celebrated nationally March 10-16. The Ashe County Library joins thousands of other libraries and schools across the country who are celebrating this year’s theme, “Check In @ Your Library.” Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, educators, and other concerned adults. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to use libraries’ non-print resources for education and recreation.

The purpose is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through libraries, such as DVDs, databases, audio books and video games.

Teens’ use of technology increased dramatically in recent years, yet more teens are doing this from home instead of the Library. The Pew Internet & American Life project found that 93 percent of teens go online, with many using social networking sites, finding news and information, sharing content they create, and looking for information on health. Teens need to know that the Library is a trusted resource for accessing information and that librarians are the experts who can help them develop the skills they need to use electronic resources effectively and efficiently.

Throughout the week FUN activities are planned for teens to explore digital ways for turning new, imaginative ideas into virtual reality. Stop by after school and discover technology for animated characters and musical play lists. Be creative with words and artistic expressions. Keep, share or compete with your own creations. Check in using QR codes for a TTW scavenger hunt.

If you've not yet heard of the Harlem Shake internet-meme-cum-dance-craze then let us educate you . We want you… as zombies, wearing your school or ACC garb, or just as you are to join us as we create shake moves to promote reading! Refreshments will be served.

On Saturday, March 16 at 1:00 join use for a Battle Royale playoff and pick your favorite DJ! Oh yes
